Light the Night 2010

On December 21st, the longest night of the year, Art at the Center held their second annual Light the Night community art event. All were invited to view the children’s artwork from the studio’s fall session, and to create light paintings - using only a camera, tripod, and flashlights. Sparklers, cellphones, light-up toys, bike reflectors and bright glow sticks can have equally interesting effects.

Kids were able to experiment with shape, color, and movement as the group shared ideas for each picture.

Indoor and outdoor spacess were used to create a variety of environments, and different options for techniques and movements in the group where they would have to work together.

This year, a large monitor was hooked up to the camera so that the group could see their light paintings almost instantly after each shot was taken.

Pairing up, the group was also able to create body tracings and plan out scenes, but every finished light painting was always a surprise.

For more examples of light painting, you can see more photos from the night at http://picasaweb.google.com/kathrynconeway/LightTheNight10#.  Last year's Light the Night event at Art at the Center was featured in the book: Paint the World with Light: a Student Creative Production which you can find on www.carrotrevolution.blogspot.com, and a preview at http://www.blurb.com/books/1372522
